5 Healthy Skin Care Resolutions for Glowing Skin This Year
The New Year is always the perfect time for resolutions. We all want to be healthier, more productive, and feel better in general. And while it's easy to get caught up in the mindset that it's going to take a ton of work to get to where we want to go, building the habits that lead to glowing skin is not as painstaking of a process as you may think.
It doesn't matter if you're in your early 30's or late 60's - maybe you're just now realizing that you wish you had done more for your skin sooner. It's never too late to make your skin a priority, beginning to love what you see on the surface and how you feel underneath it. Because, thankfully, skin that glows on the outside means thriving skin that protects and is essential to your overall health.
Here are five healthy skincare resolutions you need this year!
1. Wash your face daily
Of course, it's never bad to wash your face. It feels good and refreshes you for the day ahead. But are you getting all areas equally or just moving on when it's done because it must be good enough?
Using a gentle cleanser and lukewarm water, use your fingertips to wash off all the day's dirt, sweat, and makeup (always remove makeup first!). After one minute of cleansing, rinse with lukewarm water and let your face air dry or pat it dry with a soft cloth. But don't only wash your face before bed - do it once in the morning too.
Be sure not to skip over your jawline and neck, two commonly overlooked areas just as prone to debris and dirt buildup!
2. Regularly wash your makeup brushes
Neglecting your makeup brushes' cleanliness isn't only damaging to your skin, but to the brushes themselves, where makeup residue can weigh down the bristles, causing them to weaken and break.
Use water with a gentle soap or brush cleanser to wash your makeup brushes at least once a month. Foundation or concealer brushes should be washed once a week.
3. Moisturize and use sunscreen daily
Our skin is our largest organ, and it protects us from UV rays and toxins in the environment. SPF helps prevent premature aging of your skin by preventing sunburns or damage caused by ultraviolet light exposure. Adding moisture helps you lock in that protective barrier, keeping your skin hydrated and fresh.
When it comes to sunscreen, you need both UVA and UVB protection. It doesn't matter if it's a cloudy day or you are only going outside for 10 minutes - wear SPF daily! Consider using a light moisturizer in the morning and applying sunscreen or face serum with SPF regularly throughout the day. If you have dry skin, using a heavier cream at night can help seal in moisture while you sleep.
4. Wash your pillowcase often
No matter how well you've been keeping up with cleaning your face and makeup brushes, that won't protect you from the allergens, dandruff, dust mites, sweat, and dead skin cells piling up on your pillow each night.
Experts recommend washing your pillowcase once each week, particularly if you're breakout-prone. But a more practical solution could be keeping an extra pillowcase or two to use in rotation. Consider a set of silk pillowcases, which will absorb less moisture than cotton!
5. Reevaluate your skincare routine
Maybe you're not quite sure what's best for your skin at this point in your life. After all, everyone's skin is different, and skincare needs literally change with each season.
